Gwen K. Newsome

PhD, LPCS, NCC

Gwen received her Master’s degree in counseling at UNC-Greensboro and her Ph.D. at North Carolina State University. During her doctoral training, she did a clinical internship with the Veteran’s Administration where she provided individual, group, and couples counseling at the Raleigh Vet Center. She also counseled at-risk youth through local community organizations. In addition to her work as a clinical mental health counselor, Gwen teaches graduate courses in mental health counseling and provides supervision to counselors seeking professional licensure. Her background includes combat and sexual trauma; military families in transition, stress related to multicultural issues of race and gender, anxiety, and depression. Also included in her background are issues related to self-esteem and life transition issues such as divorce, grief and loss, retirement, job loss/change, leaving for college, relocation and related areas that may cause an individual to experience a sense of uncertainty or feel overwhelmed. She works with adolescents, adults and families.

At the foundation of Gwen’s counseling style is a person-centered approach that honors the uniqueness of the individual and their inherent strengths. She believes that counseling is a collaborative process that, through hard work, holds the potential to be liberating for people experiencing obstacles in their life journey. It offers the individual an opportunity to invest in their emotional, cognitive, and behavioral wellbeing with the prospect of continued growth at the termination of therapy.
